How Many Black Lights Do I Need?

The right number depends on the size of your space, how vivid you want the effect to be, and how much ambient light you're working with. Below are the recommendations we give customers based on years of running black light events in everything from classrooms to full high school gymnasiums.

Placement Matters More Than Quantity

You'll get dramatically better results with smart placement than with extra fixtures.

Mount cannons high — on truss, bleachers, or add on one of our light stands.

Cross-light from opposite corners so the beams overlap.

Aim slightly downward across the crowd, not straight down or straight across.

Spread cannons across multiple sides of the room rather than clustering them in one spot.

A Common Mistake

Lighting a gym from only one end

UV falls off fast with distance, especially in large reflective rooms. Even powerful fixtures lose punch after 40–60 feet. Always plan to light the room from multiple angles — cross-light from corners or run cannons along both long walls.

Four ways to make any setup look brighter and more saturated without renting more fixtures.

For a standard high school gym dance, our Full package (8 cannons) is the most-rented setup. It gives strong, even coverage across the dance floor without leaving dark zones around the bleachers. Whether it's a birthday party, a neon-themed wedding reception, or an adult glow event, black lights set the tone the moment guests walk in. The right setup makes a familiar room feel like a completely different space.

For most home and venue glow parties, 2 to 4 cannons (our Minimal or Basic package) does the job. The exception is large open-floor receptions — those venues usually need 4 to 8 cannons to feel evenly lit. Glow parties live or die by what your guests wear; send a "wear white or neon" note on the invitations and stock up on glow accessories.

Halloween is peak season for black light rentals. They turn a yard full of pumpkins into a haunted display that actually feels unsettling — white sheets glow like ghosts, fake blood looks otherworldly, and skeleton decorations stand out from across the yard.

For most home Halloween setups, one or two cannons handles a single room or porch area. Haunted houses, school Halloween events, and larger gatherings typically use the Basic or Full package depending on scale. Book Halloween rentals early — October is our busiest month and gym packages sell out by mid-September most years.

Do the black lights get hot?

No. Unlike traditional incandescent or fluorescent black lights, our LED cannons stay cool to the touch even after hours of continuous operation. Safe to mount near fabric decorations, set on a stand within reach of guests, or use at events with children.

What materials glow under black light?

Most white fabrics glow brightly, especially shirts and tablecloths. Highlighter ink, fluorescent paint, neon party supplies, white teeth, tonic water, petroleum jelly, and many laundry detergents (anything with "optical brighteners") also fluoresce. Black light reactive paint, body paint, and glow accessories give the strongest effect.

Is setup difficult?

No. Each cannon plugs into a standard wall outlet and turns on with a switch. No programming, no DMX controllers, no special configuration. Most customers have their full setup running within 15 minutes of opening the box. Adding stands takes a few extra minutes.

How far in advance should I book?

For most events, 3 to 4 weeks gives you the best selection. For peak season — October for Halloween, April through May for proms and end-of-year dances — book 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Same-week and same-day orders are sometimes possible. Call us if you're working on short notice.

Can I rent for just one night?

Every rental includes a 5-day rental window with free shipping both directions. That gives you plenty of time to receive the package, set up, run your event, pack up, and return it without paying for additional days.

What's included in my rental?

Everything you need to plug in and operate the lights: the cannon fixtures, power cables, and a prepaid return shipping label. Light stands are available as add-ons. Setup is plug-and-play with no controllers required.

Do you ship to my area?

We ship to all 48 contiguous U.S. states. Shipping is free both ways on every rental.

What happens if a fixture arrives damaged?

Inspect your rental as soon as it arrives. If any fixture is damaged or not working properly, contact us within 24 hours of delivery so we have time to ship a replacement before your event. Damage reported outside this 24-hour window may not allow enough time for replacement shipping.
